Spring Events 2023
January - School choir
Our fantastic school choir have started their rehearsals again this term and we are all excited to hear their next performance.
1st February - School Games Participation in Sports Festival
Some of our Year 5 and 6 children went along to Howe Bridge Leisure Centre in Wigan today to try their hand at some of the activities on offer through @bewell Wigan. They enjoyed trying out the climbing wall, skate park, assault course and archery activities on their visit and had a fantastic time. This event was a participation event and was designed to give an opportunity for children to attend who haven't been to competitions before.
7th February - Parent and carer coffee morning
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our termly coffee morning today. It was lovely to see you and enjoy a sit down, a cup of tea and have a lovely chat.
February - Reading Ambassadors
This month our class reading ambassadors have been meeting to discuss what it is that makes them a reader. They have been talking to their classes about why they like to read and discussing the types of books they like to share. They have created classroom door displays to show what their class teachers are reading and posters to celebrate the fact that everyone is a reader!
7th February - Children's Mental Health Week 2023
We welcomed the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in school today to deliver our key stage assemblies for Children's Mental Health Week. This year's theme is 'Let's Connect', and MHST spoke to the children about how we can make meaningful connections with people to live happy and healthy lives. We learnt that connection is vital for our wellbeing and to ensure that people thrive together.
2nd March - World Book Day
Children across school spent the day in their PJ's today sharing their favourite books and stories and celebrating everything wonderful about books! Look out for the book voucher that came home with your children this week.
8th & 10th March - Poet visit to school
This week we have welcomed the Poet Ian Bland into school to share some of his interactive poems with everyone in engaging and fun assemblies. The children also had the opportunity to take part in various poetry workshops, where they developed their own poems and performed them to an audience.
9th March - a new competition sports kit arrives in school!
We would like to say a massive thank you to UK Sports who are sponsors of our new competition sports kits. Matt Quigley from UK Sports delivered the kits today and presented them to the children - they were delighted with them!
March - Smarties fund raising
Thank you to all of our parents and carers who contributed to our fund raising activity over the half term holiday. We have counted up all of the children's well earned money and we have managed to raise a massive £1460.47. Wow! This money will go towards the development of our playground areas. Watch this space!
22nd March - 'It's a hard Knock life!'
Our fantastic Year 1 and Year 2 dancers took part in a dance competition today at Dance 180. They danced their socks off and won third place and a HUGE trophy! Well done girls!
30th March - Easter Bonnet and Easter Egg competition
Well done to everyone who took part in our Easter competitions today. We saw some absolutely wonderful creations and you made judging them very hard!
10th January - Recycle, recycle!
We are pleased to announce that we have taken delivery of some new recycling bins outside for our waste paper. Our Eco-committee members have produced new posters to display around school to encourage recycling.
January - Library Book Club
This week we have welcomed the official start of our lunchtime book club that is being kindly run by some of our volunteer grandparents in school.
Our Year 6 librarians are assisting our volunteers in opening our school library to our Key Stage 2 children over the lunchtime period. The children can come along and change their library books, browse books or simply talk about their love of reading! So far it has been a great success.
3rd February - Kurling competition
A massive well done to our Kurling team who took part in a competition today against other local schools. They took part with smiles on their faces throughout and made everyone proud with their team work and behaviour.
23rd January - Governor Day
We welcomed members of our Governing Body into school today to meet with the children and see the amazing work that they have been doing in class. They were very impressed with the children's books and the progress that everyone is making.
They also spoke to our school council members about what makes Garrett Hall a great school. They were amazed at how articulate our pupils are and pleased to hear all the positive comments about life at Garrett Hall.
27th & 28th February - Year 3 trip to Northwood Farm
Our year 3 children have enjoyed a visit to Northwood Farm this week to learn all about the Stone Age. They have had a fantastic first few days back at school after the half term break.
9th & 24th March - EYFS stay and learn sessions.
Today we held our first 'stay and learn' phonics session for our Reception parents and carers. Everyone who came found out about how we teach phonics in school and took part in lots of phonics based activities and games with their children.
8th March - Year 2 Reading meeting
Parents and carers were welcomed into school today to find out more about the importance of reading. The meeting included what is involved in teaching children to read both phonics books and reading for pleasure books, and the importance of support from home. We also discussed the reading SAT papers that children will complete at the end of the school year.
8th March - swimming gala
Well done to our swimming team who took part in today's swimming gala at the Pelican Centre in Tyldesley. You made us proud as always!
15th March - Year 3 trip to Chester
Our Year Three children enjoyed as fantastic trip to Chester today as they explored the Roman city and found out what it was like to be a Roman Gladiator!
The children visited The Grosvenor Museum and took part in various workshops to learn more about the Romans. They also went for a tour of the city dressed as Roman Gladiators!
27th & 28th March - Year 3 class assemblies
Well done to all of the children in Mrs Stickler's class and Mr Parr's class this week. You put on wonderful performances of your class assemblies and I know that your teacher, parents and carers were very proud of you. Well done.
March - Spring edition of the Garrett Gazette
Well done and thank you to our amazing Garrett Gazette team who have published another brilliant edition of their termly newsletter.
24th January - Yoga sessions
Some of our Year 3 children took part in a Yoga taster session today with Toni Marie Yoga in Atherton. They thoroughly enjoyed their lesson.
9th February - Wider Opportunities
Some of our Year 4 children performed two of their final pieces today from their Wider Opportunities lessons... I'm sure you will agree, they sound fantastic!
8th February - Sports Hall Athletics
A massive well done to our Sports Hall Athletics Year 6 team who took part in a variety of events at Lowton High School today against other local schools. They showed commitment and determination throughout and were very proud winners! Well done team!
February - School Council
This month our class councillors have been meeting to discuss fund-raising events to raise money for our school playground equipment. They have some innovative ideas and can't wait to put them into action. Watch this space!
7th February - Year 6 SATs meeting
We welcomed our Year 6 parents and carers into school this evening to talk about what is involved in the Year 6 SATs later this year. The staff talked about how they will prepare the children for these assessments and answered any questions that people had. There was also an opportunity to look at some example SAT papers.
Monday 13th February - Valentines Discos!
Children throughout school had a fantastic time at their Valentines Discos tonight. There was lots of dancing and even more smiles from everyone. Love was definitely in the air!

7th March - Year 5 culture trip to Manchester
Our Year 5 children enjoyed a trip into Manchester today to learn more about the culture on offer in our local city. They visited the Manchester Art Gallery to explore some of the wonderful exhibitions on display and also had a trip to the Bridgewater Hall to see first hand where the Halle Orchestra perform.
March - Pirates, pirates, pirates!
A new school term means that the children in our EYFS department are starting a new topic all about pirates! Will they find out where Pesky Pirate Pete has hidden the stolen treasure?
17th March - Red Nose Day
Thank you very much for all of your kind donations towards Comic Relief this year. We raised £372 to send to this very worthy cause.
Week beginning 20th March - French Taster Days
Thank you very much to Mrs Hughes who organised our KS1 and KS2 French taster days this week. The children enjoyed learning more about the French culture, tasted food, played games, sang songs and learnt some new French vocabulary!
30th March - Spaceman visit
Our year one children enjoyed a visit from a real life spaceman today to finish off their topic 'Zoom to the moon'. They all had a fantastic day and learnt so much about what it was like to travel in space!
