Autumn Events 2022
September - Welcome to our new EYFS children
Its has been wonderful to welcome all of our new Nursery and Reception children into school this week. They have joined the rest of our children brilliantly and are already settled into their new routines.

30th September - Macmillan Coffee Morning
Thank you to everyone who donated cakes and came along to our Macmillan Coffee Morning today. It certainly was a packed event! The children made us all proud with their beautiful singing and your kind donations will be sent to a very worthy cause that is close to all our hearts.
13th October - Year 6 trip to The Imperial War Museum
Our Year 6 children had a brilliant day exploring the Imperial War Museum in Manchester today. They found out about World War Two through artefacts and films as part of their topic work on 'A Child's War'. It was a very moving and poignant trip for our children, who were sensible and respectful throughout.
October 20th - Halloween Disco Time!

4th November - Year 3 celebrating the Egyptians
Our year 3 children ended the week with a special Egyptian celebration to mark the 100 year anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. They have spent the week writing a descriptive diary entry of Howard Carter's discovery and have enjoyed designing and playing Egyptian games, cracking Egyptian maths puzzles and even eating Egyptian food!
8th November - Year 2 workshops with ALTRU Theatre company
Our Year 2 children enjoyed learning more about The Great Fire Of London today by taking part in drama workshops. These fantastic activities have allowed our children to develop their knowledge and understanding about how the fire started, why it spread so quickly and the impact on the city and people of London – all in just one school day! The children got to perform as characters, explore emotions and learn about the timeline of events from this important period in history.

14th November - Year 2 visit to Staircase House
Our Year 2 children have had an amazing day today learning all about the Plague and The Great Fire of London at Staircase House in Stockport. They were a credit to our school and amazed the staff with their excellent knowledge and fantastic behaviour.
17th November - Children in Need day
Thank you for all of the donations today towards this wonderful cause. We have raised over £445!
November - EYFS Diwali celebrations
Our Reception children have been learning all about Diwali over the past few weeks. They have enjoyed lots of themed activities and also tried some Indian food.
25th November - Parent and Carer Coffee Morning
Thank you to those who attended the first of our termly coffee mornings today.We welcomed Be Well, Start Well and MHST to the event and enjoyed a relaxing chat over coffee and biscuits; finding out about what is on offer in our local community.
Our next coffee mornings will be held on 7th February 2023 and 9th June 2023. Please come along and join us, you are all welcome!
8th December - Carol Service at St. Georges Church
A huge well done to our wonderful key stage 2 choir, who sang their hearts out at the carol service tonight.

13th December - Reverend Cox visits Nursery
Our Nursery children enjoyed a special visit from Reverend Cox today and learnt about The Nativity Story. He talked to the children about this important event in the Christian Calendar, shared picture books and spoke to them about the Christmas period.
8th September - Our school community remembers HRH Queen Elizabeth II
Today, our Garrett Hall Community, alongside the whole country, remembers our late Queen, Elizabeth II. We remember a life of giving, love, and of joy; a life of selfless service to others. Together tomorrow, we will have two minutes of silence, to think about her, her family, and our country, and to give thanks for her reign and leadership. May she rest in peace.
7th October - Computer Xplorers
Our year 5 children have taken part in Computer Xplorer workshops this week. They have enjoyed taking their Ancient Greek topic and bringing it up yo date by becoming app developers!
14th October - Wigan Athletic under 11's Football Tournament
Well done to some of our Year 6 children who took part in the Wigan Athletic Football Tournament today. You were all fantastic and represented our school brilliantly.
20th October - ATSA Cross Country Competition
Our Cross Country Team are all ready for the run this afternoon; even the rain didn't put them off!
2nd November - Computer Xplorers visit to the Reception classes
The children in our Reception classes have had a fantastic day working with Richard and Emily from Computer Xplorers. They have taken part in special workshops that taught them new skills of coding and programming so that they could move Botley the Robot.
7th November - Year 4 meet Wayland the Viking!
Our Year 4 children have had a great day today meeting Wayland the Viking as part of their topic work. They have been learning all about Viking crafts, handling artefacts and even attended a warrior school!
10th November - Year 1 trip to Imagine That
Our wonderful Year 1 children had a brilliant day today on their first ever school trip! They enjoyed exploring a range of 'hands-on' activities linked to their science and topic work in school at Imagine That in Liverpool.
11th November - Garrett Hall Remembers
Our Key Stage 1 and 2 children paid their respects to our fallen heroes with a minute silence today, whilst the youngest children in our EYFS classes have been taking part in Poppy Day activities to mark this important time of year.
23rd November - LKS2 Dance competition
Some of our amazing lower junior children took part in a dance competition today and secured themselves a brand new shiny trophy for second place!
Wow... well done children, you danced your socks off and made everyone proud.
Week Beginning 5th December - It's Nativity Time!
We would like to say a massive well done to all of the children in our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes for putting on such fantastic Nativity performances this week. You have all performed to packed audiences and left everyone smiling and bursting with pride!
Week beginning 5th December - Dream and Believe Intra-House World Cup Competition
This week our children across school have taken part in mini football tournaments within their year groups to celebrate the World Cup event. All children have enjoyed practicing their ball skills and playing sport as part of a team.
Week beginning 12th December - Christmas Parties!
Children across the school have enjoyed their Christmas Parties this week. We've had dancing, music and lots of party games to enjoy, and it has been a fantastic way to finish off a wonderful Autumn Term in school.
28th September - Wigan Youth Climate Summit
Some of our Eco-Committee members took part in the Wigan Youth Climate Summit today where they shared ideas about improving our impact on the environment. They even got to listen to a talk from Aneeshwar Kunchala from Britain's Got Talent. He spoke to the children about different projects to help save our planet.
5th October - Boxing!
Our boxing team enjoyed the ATSA boxing taster session today at St. George's Primary School. This non-contact sport gave the children the opportunity to experience a different way of keeping active. Well done children, you were amazing!
19th October - FLHS Festival of Dance!
Our year 5 and 6 dancers have spent the last six weeks learning choreography from four of our very pwn Garrett Hall alumni! Both performances were amazing and we are very proud of everyone involved.

21st October - Harvest Festival
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Harvest Festival today. We collected 282 kilograms of food for the Atherton and Leigh Food Bank. An amazing response!
31st October - Pumpkin Competition
Thank you to all those children who took part in our annual pumpkin competition this year. All of the entries were amazing and we clearly have some very creative pumpkin carvers out there! Well done everyone!
4th November - Kurling Champions!
A massive well done to our Year 5 & 6 Kurling champions this afternoon who won the competition against eight schools. You were all absolutely fantastic and we are very proud of all the hard work and practicing you have completed recently.
9th November - Year 5 Greek Day!
Our Year 5 children took part in a day packed full of Greek workshops today and strengthened their knowledge of Athens and Sparta. They enjoyed a carousel of activities; ranging from clay work, investigating artefacts, exploring Greek stories and lots of drama.
What a fantastic way to discover more about Ancient Civilisations, chronological order, archaeology and different historical sources and interpretations.
14th November - Odd Socks Day!
Today our children were invited to wear odd socks to school to mark the start of Anti-Bullying Week.
Odd Socks Day is an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique! It was great to see so many children taking part; thank you!
15th November - Visit from the Climate Change Team
Our junior children enjoyed an informative assembly from Ellen at Wigan Council's Climate Change Team today. She talked to the children about global warming and how we could all do just one thing to make a difference. We all agreed to try to remember to turn off the lights when we leave a room, or even try to walk to school a bit more.
1st December - Coloured Hampers
We held our annual Christmas Jumper Day today and collected donations for our popular Coloured Christmas Hampers.
Raffles were drawn and we had some very happy winners. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the hampers and also to those who bought raffle tickets. We made over £550 to go towards our playground development.
8th December - Christmas Dinner Day!
Today all of the children were invited to have a Christmas Dinner in school. This is always a fantastic occasion with a lovely meal cooked by our kitchen staff. The children ate their dinner singing to Christmas songs, pulling crackers and spending time talking to their friends.
9th December - Year 3 trip to Bolton Museum
The children in our Year 3 classes have enjoyed a very informative trip to Bolton Museum today to finalise their topic on the Ancient Egyptians. They have taken part in lots of hands on workshops and tested their knowledge through various activities. As always, they have all been great ambassadors for our school.
